Understanding Bacterial Vaginosis
The vagina contains a complex community of microorganisms. Beneficial bacteria, particularly Lactobacillus species, are associated with maintaining the naturally acidic vaginal environment. BV occurs when this natural bacterial balance becomes disrupted.
What are the symptoms?
Some women with BV experience no obvious symptoms
When symptoms occur, they may include:
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- An unpleasant or fishy vaginal odour
- Vaginal discomfort
- Irritation
BV or thrush?
| BV | Thrush | |
|---|---|---|
| Odour | Often noticeable / fishy | Usually not prominent |
| Discharge | Often thin / watery | Often thicker |
| Itching | Can occur | Common |
| Vaginal flora | Bacterial imbalance | Candida / yeast involvement |
Not sure what you're experiencing?
Speak with your pharmacist or healthcare professional, particularly if symptoms are new, persistent, recurrent or you're uncertain about their cause. Information on this website is general in nature and does not replace advice from a healthcare professional.
Why does pH matter?
Your vagina is naturally acidic
A healthy vaginal environment generally maintains an acidic pH. Think of it as an ecosystem — each part supports the next.
